Now this parts catalog cover was a real lesson in compromise.
The client very much wanted a montage of car photos. They have a thriving
business of finding and restoring parts and had lots of photographs. Unfortunately
not all the shots were workable. Some were taken next to a garage or with
really bad reflections (the downside to spotlessly shiney cars is they reflect
the surroundings like mirrors). But when I saw this shot (provided high
resolution too!) I thought we had a winner.
I worked up a cover with just ONE shot, this one by Lake
Hartwell in South Carolina. It had been taken professionally and from the
tone, lighting, and setting it was obvious. The client relented realizing
they'd paid a pro for a professional shot. And sometimes one great shot,
though not telling you everything they do for every make and model of every
car, tells enough. Don't you want to hop into that beast and go for a ride
around the lake?
The font is Jefferies, from Matt Jefferies, the production
designer. Working with Photoshop's style palette I was able to rework some
glassy button procedures. Though I didn't mean to do a complimentary color
palette, the metallic orange finish of the car and the dusk sky just gave
me a good orange and blue scheme.
The other car photos made it to the back cover.
