What is a Lib File and Why is it so Important?

Suddenly your favorite application won't open because some "'Lib file' could not be found"?

Lib is short for Library, and it designates a piece of system software that adds functionality to things like font suitcases and system resources--sharing information across the whole landscape of your computer. If you get the Error Message only when you try to launch PageMaker, try reinstalling PageMaker. If the Error Message shows up when you try to launch a few different applications, then you might have a damaged file that the application needs.

Your next step is to check the Extensions Manager for missing or damaged files. See if you can find the "Lib" that is the problem. For instance, if you get an error message that says "OTUtilityLib could not be found" see if you can locate the OT--Open Transport--extension, and turn them on. Restart the computer.

If that doesn't work or you can't locate the lost "Lib" files then the damage might be more severe.

Run the Disk First Aid and repair the directory. Or try Norton Utilities. Or Disk Warrior. It may be a serious problem so be sure you've backed up your important files.

Run the system software installer from the Mac OS CD--be careful not to use the Apple Software Restore CD. Chose the "Custom Install" to only replace the component you need and not the whole System folder--the brains of the computer.

Sometimes just running Disk First Aid or Norton (Disk Doctor then Speed Disk) can clean up the problem by sorting the files.

Carbonlib

CarbonLib prior to 2002 may need to be updated. See http://download.info.apple.com/ for their latest information. Working in FreeHand, I suddenly lost the ability to view EPS files. Needless to say I tried the various redraw/scrolling preferences, none of which got me more than a keyline-like view (a box with an X through it instead of photos and graphics). MacroMedia's very own John Nosal pointed me into the right direction for updating the G4's carbon-based programming library!
