How Do I Make a Hair Brush In PhotoShop?

To make wood grains in PhotoShop you need a hairy brush or two. They're also great for rendering fur and hair. And when it comes to adding a non-mechanical texture, you can't beat 'em! If you don't have any ".abr" files tucked away with your PhotoShop software, you can make your own. (In fact, you can make any grayscale image into a brush.)

1. Create a low rez page. Honest, it has to be low to work. 64x64 is great.
You should get a teeny, tiny page.

2. Select the soft edged 65 px brush. And change the Mode to "Dissolve." This will create a nice dotted image in the next step.

3. Zoom in close so you can see clearly. Barely tap the brush into the middle of your 64x64 pixel page.

4. Go to >Filters>Blur to soften the whole thing a bit.

5. Select All.

6. Go to >Edit>Define Brush*. Click Okay. Your new brush should appear at the bottom of you Brush list.
*Older versions of PhotoShop may require you to use the Brush Palette's little options arrow and click on Define Brush. And you can rename the brush anything you'd like!
